heres a fragmentary post from a machine i never use anymore about.... what about a rpg that uses the card game system from arkham horror
things from the arkham horror card game that might be good for a rpg
the player has two health bars, generally one weaker than the other
here there are two resources that the game can threaten and the player must protect both. if either resource is reduced to 0 the player is defeated, takes 1 permanent damage to that resource, and cannot be returned to the scene
so some characters are more health and others are more sanity... this is the basic rpg thing of you can be a strength or a dexterity guy,
but if we use the 'gunslinger' mechanic... like pathfinder's gunslinger... the player has a resource that goes up and down, and powers that activate on state changes for that resource... if you have this much resource use this power
so arkham has... health gunslingers and sanity gunslingers (like calvin and agnes for example)
cards as player abilities
so this adds a bunch of weird abstract card stuff... is that good for an rpg?
--------------------
the first thing it adds is decks and hands and discard piles... so you get characters like wendy and harvey and yorick, who are sort of deck- and discard- jockeys.
these things are also... resources that the game can threaten. you can generally only play cards from you hand, and the game can mill your deck to skip your hand... so you also have to protect your deck from this sort of attack with recycling etc
so the problem with this imo is a deck and hand of cards doesnt mean anything in the fiction of the game, it doesnt have the solidity or verisimilitude of things like spells and monsters and denies players the freedom of choosing unrestricted from among their abilities,
it adds this layer of abstraction that... players of rpgs might not like
but if you think of dnd the dice also... dont really add anything inworld to the game, people have this like weird relationship with the dice but it could have been a bag or a deck or something...
so we can perhaps ignore that a deck isnt really anything or perhaps embrace it and give it some inworld flavor but we're probably going to keep this element, the deck of cards, thats the exercise anyway

so the bagbuilding....

so the upgrading....
