agps manual of style

i purchased a manual of style, which is a book written in the style that it describes, which is kinda borges. so now all my writings is gonna be kinda pretentious as i work through this style manual and callibrate [Jeremy W: Which one? I am a CMOS adherent.]  its the australian government publishing service style manual, 1978. its pretty good. the binding says

STYLE MANUAL for authors editors and printers … [logo]

all that on the spine, nothing else on the binding, which is teal and feels like canvas over thick card halftitle page (in small caps)

the australian government publishing service might be my new favorite publisher of all time. you can see som of the covers on a google image search. im very excited to locate more of their texts.

i got this one at my favourite second hand book shop in Brisbane, the place next to the pancake church. its in an old victorian building and the floor creaks as you walk around. very hardcore casual place.

i guess a cleric is a lawful guy to the wizard's chaotic guy. a manual of style is a cleric thing to have.

stop multiplying dice together

thinking about dice too much has made me care about a thing that doesn't matter but it bugs me when i see it sometimes and now i will share this anxiety with you.

say you want a number between 1 and 144. so you roll 2d12s and you multiply them together. that'll give you a nice flat spread right?

if you want to do like a d100 thing with d12s, you have to do (d12 *12)-12 + d12-1

which is a little too complicated to ask of somebody at the table. if you had d12s marked like d10s (from 0 to 11) it'd be more straightforward but basically just don't multiply dice together, it makes a really noisy graph that trends low.

how important is this? somewhere between not important at all and maybe very slightly important. if you're rolling monsters with lots of hit dice this way you skew the results in the players' favor.

list idea rules

1 shuffle ideas because the good ideas are not at the beginning/the end? if you don't like ideas just cross it off and don't do it. take out the bad ideas, make a shorter list.
2 if only one idea is good. don't try to think of others like it: drop the others and move that idea to the top, start a new list about it.
3 include extra stuff, instead of in an appendix, put it in the text.
4 save a good idea for later? no! use the idea now. what are you thinking?
